Chairman Micah Caskey
House Judiciary Committee – General Laws Subcommittee
323B Blatt Building
Columbia, SC 29201
Dear Chairman Caskey and Members of the House Judiciary General Laws
On behalf of the South Carolina Retail Association (SCRA) and its retail members, we want to share our full support for H.3013: Sunday Sales of Alcoholic Liquors. This legislation would allow eligible localities to hold a public referendum to permit licensed retailers to sell alcohol on Sundays. This legislation is important to SCRA and its members as businesses continue to invest and grow in South Carolina.
South Carolina’s consumers are accustomed to choices when shopping: from choosing the retailer at which they spend their hard-earned dollars to deciding what they put in their grocery carts. Unfortunately, the choice on where to purchase alcoholic liquors on Sunday does not exist in all areas of our state.
From a business perspective, prohibiting Sunday sales creates operational difficulties for retailers, especially those with multiple locations throughout our state. Some store locations are required to close on Sunday while others are allowed remain open. For employees that often alternate between store locations, this becomes particularly confusing. Allowing Sunday sales creates more opportunities for work hours for
employees and promotes jobs. All retailers large and small operate in an increasingly challenging business environment.
Our members are substantial taxpayers and employers in the state and providing local taxpayers the ability to make this decision for their communities makes common sense in 2021.
We appreciate your support. Please let me know how the South Carolina Retail Association can assist you.
